Sedation Dentistry
What is Conscious Sedation?
Conscious sedation uses medication to help young, anxious or fearful children and those with special needs cope with fear and anxiety and cooperate for necessary dental treatment in a safe, effective manner. This can help prevent injury to your child from excessive movement. It also promotes a better environment to provide quality care and comfort.
Is it safe?
Yes. Conscious sedation is safe when administered by a trained pediatric dentist who follows the sedation guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. In the event that your child requires sedation, our team will discuss sedation options, appropriate medications, patient monitoring, benefit and risks. For your child’s safety, it is especially important to contact the office with any changes in health status and follow fasting instructions from fluids and foods prior to your child’s sedation visit. After your child’s visit, our team will discuss specific post-sedation instructions with you. If you have any questions before your sedation appointment, please call our office.
- Children who will be sedated should be healthy and free from sickness when they come in for their appointment. If your child is sick please call and let us know so that we can reschedule your appointment for another date.
- Children who have been sedated are requested to remain home the remainder of the day with adult supervision. Their behavior may change temporarily and they should do quiet activities or rest for the remainder of the day.
- On the morning of the sedation appointment, please do not give your child anything more than a small handful of cheerios and 4 oz of clear liquid (half a glass of apple juice/water).
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide — more commonly known as “laughing gas” — is often used as a sedative during a dental visit. The gas is colorless and odorless with a faint, sweet smell. It is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps children; phobic or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are conscious and can talk to their dentist during their visit. Most children are enthusiastic about the administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen because it can make them feel relaxed. After treatment, the nitrous oxide is turned off and oxygen is administered for five to 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects wear off almost immediately. Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea and constipation.
